This essay contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12. While the Youth Essay and Patriot’s Pen competition requires a written essay, the Voice of Democracy competition requires the submission of an audio essay. This year’s topic was, “My Vision for America”. Olivia is a 10 th grade student at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
The VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay competitions are dedicated to encouraging a better understanding and appreciation for our great country and fostering patriotism among our nation’s youth. Students are asked to submit as essay in response to the question or statement on a subject which prompts them to consider how American history and democratic ideals and principles.

Christine Troll, a senior home-school student from Somerset, Pa., was named the 2018-19 Voice of Democracy first-place winner. Christine’s speech on the theme, “Why My Vote Matters,” won her.
Congratulations to Hicksville High School junior Maeryam Nasari, who won first place in the Nassau County Voice of Democracy audio essay contest, “What Makes America Great,” sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She also finished as the runner-up in the regional leg of the competition, which included submissions from several Long Island school districts.
Started in 1947, the Voice of Democracy Program is the VFW's premiere, National Audio Essay Scholarship Competition designed to give high school students the opportunity to voice their opinions on their responsibility to our country and to convey their thoughts via the broadcasting media to all America. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme.
Each year the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10904 of Manchester, accepts submissions for the Voice of Democracy Essay Competition. This is an annual nationwide scholarship program sponsored at the national level by the VFW.
