VFW Post and Auxiliary held a drive-thru for essay winners.
Patriot's Pen, a VFW-sponsored essay writing contest, is a nationwide competition that gives students in grades 6,7, and 8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. The VFW also has an annual nationwide program that provides for students in grades 9-12 to compete in the Voice of Democracy essay contest where the local winners advance on to the national level in Washington D.C., just as the Patriot’s Pen winners did.
Several students from area schools participated in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest this year. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) conducts an essay contest each year for 6th through 8th graders. Winners are chosen from each district with each first place winner sent in for a statewide judging.
The 2018-19 VFW Patriot's Pen Essay Contest has been announced and will be held in local schools, according to Tom Sharratt, Youth Activities Coordinator for Westby VFW Post 8021.
Winners were honored at the annual Voice of Democracy banquet, hosted by Marion VFW Post 1301, along with the winner of the 2016-17 Patriot’s Pen. Patriot’s Pen is an essay contest open to.
Each received an award from the Post and Auxiliary, VFW District 9 and a Proclamation Certificate from State Representative Julie Calley’s office.
